All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy

"In Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining, author Jack Torrance slowly loses his grip on sanity while ensconced in a winter-long residency as caretaker for the seasonally-closed Overlook Hotel. Over the season Jack, a struggling novelist, uses the solitude (interrupted only by his wife Wendy and son Danny) to attempt to construct his new novel. Only a few pages of Torrance’s efforts are revealed in The Shining, but every page consists wholly and entirely of the phrase “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” repeated ad infinitum over a presumably several-hundred-page manuscript. In the filmic reveal of Torrance’s creative masterpiece, Wendy emotionally collapses as she finally realizes the extent of her husband’s crumbling rationality. Under the mental anguish of this Sisyphean task of nonlinearity, Jack Torrance’s grip on reality is weakened, much as readers feel the strain of such a non-traditional manuscript."

Rabble, an imprint of Insert Blanc Press, is co-edited by Holly Myers and Mathew Timmons. Rabble prints single author issues of critical essays of about 1500 words on a subject of the author’s choosing. The subject will be an artwork (or series of artworks), but broadly defined: could be visual art, literature, music, architecture, film, design; could be contemporary or historical. The essay will be printed in pamphlet form, with room for a couple full color images, and distributed at a reasonable price.

Rabble seeks to be a venue through which to interrogate the nature of criticism, a laboratory for prodding at the boundaries of criticism as a form. The idea is to begin with a framework that reduces criticism down to its two fundamental components—the thing that's been made and the person who responds to the thing that's been made (i.e., the art work and the critic)—and then to invite a lot of smart people to take up that framework as they see fit. We’re not looking for the average book or exhibition review, but something that tests out a new direction, whatever that means to the individual author.
We have great confidence in the potential of Rabble to make a lasting contribution to the cultural discourse on the West Coast and beyond. It is our hope that, in charting a path between the two prevailing poles of the genre—the ever-narrowing shutters of print journalism on the one hand and the ponderous obscurity of the academy on the other—Rabble will go some way in restoring the sheer excitement of criticism.

Rob Halpern is the author of several books of poetry including Rumored Place(Krupskaya), Disaster Suites (Palm Press) and most recently Music for Porn (Nightboat Books). Together with Taylor Brady he’s also the co-author of Snow Sensitive Skin(Displaced Press). A founding participant in the Nonsite Collective, he lives in San Francisco and Ypsilanti, Michigan. This reading is the Los Angeles book launch forMusic for Porn.

Marc Herbst is a co-editor of the Journal of Aesthetics & Protest. He is holding the word "fierce" with kid gloves.

Katie Herzog's recent exhibitions include "Object Oriented Programming" at the Palo Alto Research Center (exhibition catalog available through Insert Blanc Press), "Movement, Anomalies and Distractions," at the University of Oxford, and a forthcoming exhibition at the Mason Gross Galleries at Civic Square at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Insert Blanc Press is very excited to announce the debut of a new imprint on the press, Rabble, co-edited by Holly Myers and Mathew Timmons. Insert Blanc Press is happy to welcome Jackqueline Frost from the Bay Area for a good old fashioned house reading at Insert Blanc Press HQ. We are also quite happy to welcome Amanda Ackerman and Christopher Russell to read alongside our visitor from the north, both accomplished artists and authors on Insert Blanc press. And we welcome you too! Come be a part of the history and tradition of the ever so cozy and wonderfully quaint house reading. We promise not to make it too quaint. Bring a little something to drink if you like, or even something to snack on and we will do the same. Insert Blanc Press books will all be for sale at special quaint and cozy house reading discount prices. Come at 6pm for an hour of chit chatting art and poetry talk (hey be nice!); and at 7pm we'll give our writers and artists time to wow you with their work; then at 8pm we'll have a good old fashioned party until we're all tired out from all the good old fashionedness of everything (in other words from 8pm until late).

Artists Bios:

Jackqueline Frost is the author of When We Say Brutal (Berkeley Neo-Baroque) and The Soft Appeal: Sentiment in the Age of Cybernetic Disclosure (Nous-Zot Press). Her writing has appeared in Rethinking Marxism, Supermachine, La Fovea, Try!, The Poetic Labor Project, and Lana Turner. Her concerns include materialist feminism, theologico-political conceptions of poverty and animality, as well as those ‘derelict duties of self-preservation’ called crime.

Amanda Ackerman is the author of four chapbooks: Sin is to Celebration (co-author, House Press), The Seasons Cemented (Hex Presse), I Fell in Love with a Monster Truck (Insert Press Parrot #8), and Short Stones (Dancing Girl Press). She is co-publisher and co-editor of the press eohippus labs. She also writes collaboratively as part of the projects SAM OR SAMANTHA YAMS and UNFO. Her writing has been published in a variety of literary publications, including, most recently, TH.CE, Everyday Genius, WestWind Review, and Shearsman Magazine.

Christopher Russell received his BFA from California College of the Arts and Crafts in 1998 and his MFA from Art Center College of Design in 2004. From 2001 to 2005 Russell edited, designed, produced, and distributed the “destroy–to–enjoy” literary art zine Bedwetter. He was the subject of a 2009 Hammer Museum Projects solo exhibition and is represented by Luis De Jesus Los Angeles. He has also exhibited his work at Acuna Hansen, Samuel Freeman, Circus Gallery—all in Los Angeles; White Columns, New York; Van Harrison Gallery (Gallery 1R), Chicago; and other venues. His novel Sniper, edited by Amy Gestler, was published in 2011. Budget Decadence, a novella, was published by 2nd Cannons Publications and Landscape, a monograph on his work, was published by Kolapsomal Press. Russell edited and wrote an essay for the catalog that accompanied his curatorial debut, Against the Grain at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions in 2008. Additionally, he has written more than two dozen articles and reviews about art in Los Angeles. Russell’s work is in various public collections, including the Hammer Museum/Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, J.P. Getty Museum Research Institute; New York University; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

In honor of the new Insert Blanc Press being a MashUp of both Insert Press and Blanc Press, we're having the second Insert Blanc Press MashUp Monster Contest. Altered State Library, Katie Herzog’s Blanc Press Series is a limited series of 11 new works to accompany Herzog’s forthcoming artist monograph, Katie Herzog: Object Oriented Programming, January 13, 2012 - March 30, 2012, Palo Alto Research Center (PARC, a Xerox Company). Altered State Library was executed in the vein of German pharmacologist P.N. Witt’s research on the effect of psychoactive drugs on spiders. Instead of a web, the resulting works are a variety of representations of the Getty Research Institute Library. Each drawing will come with a signed copy of Katie Herzog's artist monograph, a large format, full color, hardbound edition of approximately 100 pages with essays by Amelia Acker and Andrew Choate.

The Insert Blanc Monograph series will begin with artist monographs from Christopher Russell and Katie Herzog and each will be preceded by a Limited Series of 10 new works by the artist. Each of the Limited Series is an individual piece by the artist and comes with a signed copy of the accompanying artist monograph.

Of his new book, Stingray Clapping, author Andrew Choate says:
In 1999 I got a job working for Crain's Business Insurance magazine, proofreading entries in theirDirectory of Corporate Buyers of Insurance. I was primarily responsible for editing the half-sentence to one-sentence long descriptions of corporations. Never having been so intimately exposed to technical language before, I fell totally in love with the quality of the writing required to convey the much-vetted specificity of a corporate description. The fact that the words were crafted for the sake of clear legal and bureaucratic meanings, rather than for the sake of literature, encouraged me to read them as if they were both specific and evocative.

Considering the glut of language we're inundated with, it's difficult for a writer sensitive to that inundation to want to generate more text to send out into the world. My writings here attempt to do what those corporate descriptions do: be exact and polyvalent.

I like short texts that respect the reader's ability to read rather than pander to their manufactured desire to be overloaded. I like texts that avoid narrative, plot, concept, character and structure; texts that focus on these things feel like they are trying to dominate the reader. That's not what I am trying to do at all, I'm trying to give the reader an opportunity. Rather than explain every little thing, can't we consider words like colors to put on the page to savor. I mean actually generating (imagining/writing) phrases that can be read the way one listens to a favorite record: at different times of day and with different desires actively in play.

The words in Stingray Clapping are simply words without any kind of justification: not conceptual, narrative or otherwise. I imagined them and arranged them and was pleased and surprised by them.

Andrew Choate was born and raised in South Carolina and studied music and literature at Northwestern University and the California Institute of the Arts. His first book, Langquage Makes Plastic of the Body, was published by Palm Press in 2006. He has been publishing his writings on music and art since 1998 and his work has appeared in Urb, Coda, Wire, Signal to Noise, Art Ltd, d’Art International and Facsimile. His writing has been translated into Spanish, French, Hungarian and Czech. His radio plays and sound works have been broadcast on WDR in Germany, Radioarte Mobile in Italy, Hipersônica in Brazil, Resonance FM in England and various outlets in the US. His visual work has been exhibited at the Yerevan Center for Contemporary Art, the Torrance Art Museum, Barnsdall Art Park, High Energy Constructs and Overca$h. He has given lectures at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles ("Picturing Language"), CalArts ("Writing for Video Performance") and Hofer's Studio Roof ("I'm Turning Sideways In This Crowded Train So You Can More Easily Pass Me By").

Teresa Carmody, author of PARROT 10 - I Can Feel, recently released I'll Drown My Book: Conceptual Writing by Women which she co-edited with Caroline Bergvall, Laynie Browne, and Vanessa Place. Dan Richert, .UNFO member and co-author of (!x==[33]), has put up the original script that created (!x==[33]) along with some moby wordlists and a text multiplier. Harold Abramowitz, .UNFO member and co-author of (!x==[33]), had a book of his recently reviewed at Jacket2 and he has some new work up at esque and in Sidebrow's new multi-author chapbook White Horse. Vanessa Place, author of Tragodía: Statement of Facts, Statement of the Case, and Argument very recently was featured on HTMLGIANT with a fairly exhaustive web retrospective of her work. Of course, this barely amounts to a drop in the bucket on the list of all the things the artists and authors on Insert Blanc Press have been getting up to. We will certainly endeavor to keep all you everybody more up to date in the coming weeks and months.

6. Are You A Brilliant Insert Blanc Intern!?

An internship at Insert Blanc will offer you a glimpse into the secret insides of small press art and literary publishing from a not non-profit perspective. As an Insert Blanc Intern you will be at the center of the day-to-day workings of a small press, assisting with editorial decisions, book design and production, copy-editing and proof-reading. You will gain the experience of ushering work from initial idea to fully realized, beautifully produced and finalized project. You will also have the opportunity to assist in event planning for readings, special events and press benefits. You will gain a holistic perspective of the arts and literary landscape in Los Angeles as well as nationally and further abroad while working on publicity & marketing to promote Insert Blanc Press' various books, art series and other projects. You will assist in developing print projects through press releases, tracking and logging reviews and you will work with and help to develop the press' media assets to create web content, web updates and newsletters while building out various social networking platforms. You will gain a broad understanding of the publishing world while submitting books and publications for awards and working to increase book sales through developing partnerships with art and literary bookstores worldwide and locally while reaching out to larger institutions to encourage them to support the press and become subscribing members.

An internship at Insert Blanc will offer you a glimpse into the secret insides of small press art and literary publishing from a not non-profit perspective. As an Insert Blanc Intern you will be at the center of the day-to-day workings of a small press, assisting with editorial decisions, book design and production, copy-editing and proof-reading. You will gain the experience of ushering work from initial idea to fully realized, beautifully produced and finalized project. You will also have the opportunity to assist in event planning for readings, special events and press benefits. You will gain a holistic perspective of the arts and literary landscape in Los Angeles as well as nationally and further abroad while working on publicity & marketing to promote Insert Blanc Press' various books, art series and other projects. You will assist in developing print projects through press releases, tracking and logging reviews and you will work with and help to develop the press' media assets to create web content, web updates and newsletters while building out various social networking platforms. You will gain a broad understanding of the publishing world while submitting books and publications for awards and working to increase book sales through developing partnerships with art and literary bookstores worldwide and locally while reaching out to larger institutions to encourage them to support the press and become subscribing members.

Lately I've been scouring the internets for book cover design blogs and sites and etc etc - and of course I highly recommend BibliOdyssey and 50 Watts for finding crazy illustrations and old book plates - it's more difficult to just find collections of book cover design images - so I may post some things here from time to time - likely I'll erase the original texts and look for hi-res images as much as possible - do my level best and all that - for now there's one above and look for more ...

Insert Blanc Press has published and promoted the work of over 60 artists and writers since it's humble beginnings in 2005. Blanc Press has recently published the enigmatic project (!x==[33]) Book 1 Volume 1 by .UNFO and has garnered attention by publishing the three volume series Tragodía by Vanessa Place.

Over the course of December I hope to raise $5,000 for Insert Blanc Press in sales and donations to fund printing and press operations in 2012. I hope to raise $2000 of the goal at the party on Saturday December 17. $2000 will go principally to funding the printing of the remainder of the PARROT series, which, if that goal is met, I hope to have out by summer 2012. An additional $1500 will go to moving all of Blanc Press' publications to a new printer and distributor which will give us international distribution and access to sites like Amazon and actually lower the price of the books. Any additional money raised to meet our total goal of $5,000 will go towards publishing new projects in 2012, including Bruna Mori's Poetry for Corporations, Kate Durbin's E! Entertainment Diamond Edition, Joseph Mosconi's GRRR ARRRGH as well as a forthcoming project by Christopher Russell and many other projects I just can't tell you about quite yet.

Jon Rutzmoser will be living in Echo Park, Los Angeles in early December. In fact, he's been living there for a while now, and he will continue to live there in early December. Marianne Morris, the British (Canadian-born) poet will be visiting Los Angeles for a few days in early December. Since the two of them have so much in common, we've decided to celebrate by having them each perform a reading at Insert Blanc Press HQ on Sunday December 4, 2011 at 6:30pm. You should come. You might enjoy seeing them perform readings.

Jon Rutzmoser (b. 1982) is an artist, writer, and educator living in Los Angeles. Recent work appears in Gaga Stigmata, Drunken Boat and X-TRA. Jon also runs an experimental theater out of his Echo Park apartment. More information at www.hystericallyreal.com.

Marianne Morris is Canadian by birth and a Londoner by day; is a writer, painter, collagemaker and taxidermic sculptor based in East London. She was born in 1981 and founded Bad Press with Jow Lindsey and Jonathan Stevenson in 2002. Morris studied English Literature at Newnham College, Cambridge, and was the recipient of the Harper-Wood Studentship for Creative Writing from St. John’s College in 2008. She is now researching for a PhD in contemporary poetry at Dartington (University College Falmouth). Publications include: Commitment (Critical Documents/Bad Press, 2011), Untitled Colossal Parlour Odes (with Luke Roberts, Sophie Robinson, Josh Stanley; Bad Press, 2011), Tutu Muse (Fly By Night Press, 2008); A New Book From Barque Press, Which They Will Probably Not Print (Barque Press, 2006); with Bad Press: Cocteau Turquoise Turning, Fetish Poems (2004); Gathered Tongue, Memento Mori (2003); Poems in Order (2002). William Maxwell Evans Perkins was born in New York City in 1884. Though he received a degree in economics from Harvard University, his passion was literature, and after college he took a position at Charles Scribner and Sons as an editor. Perkins was the only editor who recognized the brilliance of F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel, which would also be true of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. Perkins died in 1947.
